GCS is proud to be taking part in the Active Journeys programme, a Welsh Government-funded initiative managed by the Walk, Wheel, Cycle Trust (formerly Sustrans Cymru). The programme encourages learners to walk, wheel, scoot or cycle to school, helping to reduce car use, improve health and wellbeing, and develop lifelong sustainable travel habits.
As part of Active Journeys at GCS, pupil voice will play an important role. Learners will be actively involved in sharing their views and ideas to help shape our approach and ensure activities meet their needs.
Throughout the year, pupils will take part in a range of activities and events, including Road Safety Week and the Big Walk and Wheel. We will also be offering scooter skills lessons and practical sessions to help learners maintain their bikes, ensuring they are safe and ready to use.
We are delighted to welcome Dr Bike to GCS, who will provide bike maintenance and safety checks for learners’ bikes – and even some staff bikes too!
To support our journey, we have developed a clear action plan outlining how we aim to achieve the Active Journeys Bronze Award. This will guide our work as we continue to build a safe, active and sustainable travel culture within our school community.
We are excited to work together with our learners and families to promote healthier, more environmentally friendly ways of travelling to and from school.
