In maths this week we were looking at weight. First we used the numicon and scales to weigh using non-standard units, some things were very heavy!

Then we got to go outside and use our new outdoor scales - it was so much fun searching for things in the garden to weigh and trying to balance the scales! Fantastic teamwork going on in Reception/Year 1E this week!

We enjoyed being outside for our phonics work, using the little letter logs to build our own words.

During EPIC time we decided that we wanted to make pirate puppets, it was lots of fun and a great way to develop our fine motor skills - funky fingers!

The sun kept shining, and we managed to get outside for some guided reading with Miss Williams.

We decided that we wanted to make our own pirate ship, and spent some time planning out how we would make it and what it would look like. Then we worked with Miss Seabright and Miss Williams to put our plans into action... we are all over the moon with our new role play area! Ahoy me mateys!!

It looks as if Spring is finally here! So we decided to celebrate World Planting Day by starting a little experiment, we are trying to find out if the beans will grow without soil... We'll keep you updated!

We also enjoyed using our new lego resources, where we had to independently follow an instruction card to recreate the animal in the picture - excellent work!

We ended our busy week with a St.David's day performance, we performed our song and dance to 'Mi Welais Jac y Do' to the whole school and it was absolutely fantastic! We showed such confidence and our Welsh singing blew the teachers away - ardderchog!!

Here we are in the 'Funky Fingers' tuff tray, using dough to create letters and numbers and even trying to put the letters in alphabetical order! Da iawn!

Our maths focus was whole and half turns, and using positional language... We absolutely loved using ICT to develop these skills, moving the Beebot around the mat using whole and half turns and trying out the Turtle on JIT5 to park the cars.

We ended the week with a little treat at fruit time! We made fruit caterpillars and they were delicious!

Week beginning 21st January 2019

Another busy week in Reception/Y1E! Here's what we've been up to...

We read the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and worked independently to order the story from memory, then as a class we created a story map to help us tell the story.

We've started using the story to create a diary, as if we were the caterpillar and so far we've already got one Head Teacher Award for super writing!!

It's been a busy week for writing, as we've been practising our spelling words in class too...

And we've enjoyed working independently in the challenge area, using our busy books to complete our activities.

Our newest home learning activities carousel - one piece per week to be handed in on a Wednesday please.

Focus spelling words - sit, pan, nip, pat, sat

On Friday we made some new playdough in class, we followed instructions and used food colouring to make new colours with Miss.Williams! We can't wait to use the playdough for modelling, and letter and number formation.

In P.E on Friday we continued developing our ball skills, first using our feet to dribble the balls around the cones and then using our hands to bounce the ball. We need to remember to bring trainers on a Friday - it will make kicking and dribbling the ball so much easier for us.

In the Seren Yr Wythnos assembly on Thursday we had a huge surprise and our first Rights Respecting Cup winner in the class this year - Da iawn!!

We spent our maths lessons last week looking at doubling numbers, and we've decided that we can use Numicon to help us check our answers. Towards the end of the week we were really confident in mentally recalling the doubles from memory!

We also enjoyed used coloured rice to help us practise our letter formation, we are working so hard on cursive letters and as we know, practise makes perfect!

We are very lucky to have some new construction resources and have enjoyed investigating how we can use Interstar to make different models, including windmills.

On Monday PC Paul Harry came in, to talk to all of our year 1 pupils about playing safe. We had so many fantastic ideas and the year 1s shared what they had learned with reception later in the week - super listening smiley
